Attendance

Any and all absences (including doctors notes) are not excused by the State Department of Education, EXCEPT school activities. When the district does the mandated state reports, the district does get dinged for all absences.

State law states (and this is for every school district in Oklahoma), that the student must be in attendance 90% of the semester. Little Axe is a four day school week so that means, students cannot miss more than 8 days a semester to receive credit in a course. If a student misses 9 or more days a semester they may lose credit for that hour and an "NC" (No Credit) will replace the grade.

For high school only explanation: Grade level and graduation are based on 'credits'. We must be able to justify to the state department 'why' we gave a student a grade instead of a "NC" (No Credit) due to attendance on their transcript. The only way we can justify this is if we have medical notes, documentation of a funeral, etc. Although, these absences still must be within a reasonable amount for the semester.

Advocacy

When your child comes to our site, they are placed into an advocacy class, with a teacher who is their advocate.  The plan is for them to stay with this advocate for all of their years at our site to build relationships with the other students in their Advocacy as the advocate.  In the role of Advocate, the teacher can serve as the first point of contact for you and your child.  If the advocate does not know the answer, they will work with you to figure it out.  If your child is having problems, they can be there to help them navigate through the process.  Whether it be something academic, social, or mental.

Additionally, your child will receive a grade for Advocacy based on completion of their Individual Career Academic Plan or ICAP and their weekly Check and Connect.  The ICAP is worth 100 points and is state mandated for graduation.  Your child's advocate can email you more information on that if you would like.  The Check and Connect is a weekly check in that the students must complete to self report their grades and how they are feeling overall and is worth 10 points per week.
