Little Axe High School

LAHS News Feed

November 2024

Can you believe we have....FOUR more Monday's until winter break! First semester is flying by!

Be sure to check Sylogist/Wengage for student grades and attendance. As we approach the end of 1st semester, be aware of student absences.

Reminder on attendance for HIGH SCHOOL.

State law states (and this is for every school district in Oklahoma), that the student must be in attendance 90% of the semester. Little Axe is a four day school week so that means, students cannot miss more than 8 days a semester to receive credit in a course. If a student misses 9 or more days a semester they may lose credit for that hour and an "NC" (No Credit) will replace the grade.

For high school only explanation: Grade level and graduation are based on 'credits'. We must be able to justify to the state department 'why' we gave a student a grade instead of a "NC" (No Credit) due to attendance on their transcript. The only way we can justify this is if we have medical notes, documentation of a funeral, etc. Although, these absences still must be within a reasonable amount for the semester.

Application Requirements

To enroll in the Oklahoma's Promise program, the student must be:

  • a student whose parents' federal adjusted gross income does not exceed:

    • $60,000 with 1 or 2 dependent children OR

    • $70,000 with 3 or 4 dependent children OR

    • $80,000 with 5 or more dependent children.

Special income/enrollment provisions may apply to:

  • Children adopted from certain court-ordered custody and children in the custody of court-appointed legal guardians.

  • Taxable Social Security benefits based on the disability or death of the student's parent(s).

  • Students placed into DHS custody during the eighth, ninth, 10th or 11th grade who were unable to enroll in the program may enroll prior to their official date of high school graduation.

Additional documentation may be required. Contact the Oklahoma's Promise office for more information.

Applications must be:

  • completed during the school year in the student's eighth-, ninth-, 10th- or 11th-grade year (for homeschool students, the application must be completed while the student is age 13, 14, 15 or 16) and

  • witnessed by the student's parent(s), custodial parent(s) or legal guardian(s) who also agree to help the student comply with Oklahoma's Promise requirements.

*In addition, the federal adjusted gross income (AGI) of the student's parents (or the income of the student if the student is officially determined to be financially independent of their parents) may not exceed $100,000 at the time the student begins college and prior to receiving the scholarship. This income limit will be applied each year the student is enrolled in postsecondary education.

High school course requirements.

Career Tech Option

There are now two tracks for a student choosing to attend an Oklahoma public career technology center:

  • For students completing the OKPromise/college admission 15-unit curriculum, the scholarship will cover at least a portion of tuition for certain programs that meet the requirements to be eligible for federal financial aid offered at an Oklahoma public technology center. The scholarship will transfer to a college or university if the student chooses to pursue that track for their education.

  • NEW: For students completing the CORE high school graduation requirements, the scholarship will cover at least a portion of tuition for certain programs that meet the requirements to be eligible for federal financial aid offered at an Oklahoma public technology center. The scholarship is only available to be used at career technology centers and is not transferable to a college or university.

Modification for Enrollment Guidelines for Students in DHS Custody

  • Students in DHS custody can apply with documentation from DHS in the eighth, ninth, 10th or 11th grade (this is the same as it has been in the past).

  • NEW: Students who are placed in DHS custody during the eighth, ninth, 10th or 11th grade can apply for Oklahoma's Promise during the 12th grade prior to high school graduation if they were not previously enrolled.
