Advocacy

Your child will receive a grade for Advocacy based on completion of their Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP) and their weekly Check and Connect.  These are the only assignments for Advocacy, so if students are not consistently completing these activities, it is possible that they have a failing grade in Advocacy.

The ICAP is worth 100 points and is state mandated for graduation.  ICAP is completed each year of high school.  Student’s have a series of activities to complete that help steer them towards their future career.  This is not something that is permanent and can change as the student and their interests change. ICAP is a state mandated graduation requirement.

Check and Connect (C&C) is a weekly assignment that the students must complete to self-report their grades and how they are feeling overall.  Students are able to complete C&C within just a few minutes.  Depending upon the student's responses, a trusted adult (advocacy teacher, counselor or administration) may reach out to check on the students' wellbeing. It is worth 10 points per week and can be completed at any time throughout the school day, evenings, and weekend.

Attendance

Any and all absences (including doctors notes) are not excused by the State Department of Education, EXCEPT school activities. When the district does the mandated state reports, the district does get dinged for all absences.

State law states (and this is for every school district in Oklahoma), that the student must be in attendance 90% of the semester. Little Axe is a four day school week so that means, students cannot miss more than 8 days a semester to receive credit in a course. If a student misses 9 or more days a semester they may lose credit for that hour and an "NC" (No Credit) will replace the grade.

For high school only explanation: Grade level and graduation are based on 'credits'. We must be able to justify to the state department 'why' we gave a student a grade instead of a "NC" (No Credit) due to attendance on their transcript. The only way we can justify this is if we have medical notes, documentation of a funeral, etc. Although, these absences still must be within a reasonable amount for the semester.
